St. Simion Church - Turnul Rosu, Suceava

In 2009 ROCAST NORD supported with a modest donation the restoration of St. Simion Church from Suceava (also known as “Turnul Roșu"). This Church is an Armenian place of worship from the Municipality of Suceava, the building dating from 1513. It is placed at the end of Strada Armenească, forming together with the Church St. Cross (beside Ștefan cel Mare High School) an axis which deffines the Armenians old nucleus of living.

The Assembly of St. Simion Chruch was included in the List of Historical Monuments from County Suceava, being composed of two elements:

St. Simion Church – dating from the 16th century and the Bell Tower – dating from 1551.

The name "Turnul Rosu" has been used for centuries due to a legend. It appears that at the  end of the 17th century, the Polish soldiers of king Jan III Sobieski (1674 – 1696, historical documents at Zamca Monastery) fought with the Turkish and Moldovian soldiers, united in order to dislodge the invaders. The battle took place on Strada Armenească, near the Armenian Church. It is said that due to the quantity of blood, the walls of the bell tower became red, thus the name The Red Tower.

Although the restoration work started in 2004 this advanced very slowly due to the lack of funds. Until 2011 only the Chruch was partially restored, especially on the exterior in order to be protected from bad weather. The bell tower is still in dager of collapsing.
